Summary

Most importantly, I introduced the mp4 video container and handbrake for optimizing video size.

Less critically, I explained details about how video files are implemented:

A video container format can be identified by its file extension (like *.wmv or *.mp4).
However, knowing the container format does not guarantee you know the encoding and decoding algorithms (called CODECs) that were used.
For example, mp4 containers can be created with any of several different codecs: As of early 2021, H.264 is still the most common, but the newer H.265 provides even better compression. However, more decoders (viewers) understand H.264 than H.265, because H.264 has been around longer. The point is that knowing the container type is NOT sufficient to guarantee compatibility with a particular viewer because the viewer must support the CODEC used to encode the video.
Video compression can take advantage of techniques not available for still images. If you are creating videos with a tool like the excellent free Handbrake, you should recognize that you can control the bit rate in such a way that more bits are used in busy parts of the video. This Variable Bit Rate feature came out in 2006 but is now widely supported.
If you remember nothing else, then remember that MP4 is your friend, and Handbrake is a great free tool for compressing video.
