Introduction

In this lesson, you will build a mod that will let the player teleport all over the world in survival Minecraft.

A mod like this is especially useful for following maps.

At the end of the lesson, we will use this mod (along with a few others) to explore a region of Minecraft known as the far lands.

The Basics

This is how the mod will work. When the player types "forward z", the player will be teleported z (any number) blocks towards the direction the player is looking. This part of the mod is not difficult to implement.

Test the mod by typing "forward 1000." You'll soon discover that this code is impractical for survival Minecraft. There are 2 primary threats:

The player may be teleported high in the air and fall to their death.
The player may be teleported in the ground and suffocate.

Both problems can be fixed if we build a hollow glass box around the player after the player teleports. That way, the player can't suffocate or fall.

If you try running the mod again, you'll notice that the glass box won't always spawn around the player, especially if you've teleported a long distance.

That is because the chunk (portion of the map) you just teleported toneeds time to load before anything will be built.

To fix this, we will add a time delay of 2 seconds to give the game enough time to load the map.

Now the glass box will spawn more consistently. However, if the player is falling, the box will not be able to catch the player because the player is moving too fast. To fix this, we will apply the levitation effect to the player for a brief period of time. Effects are found in the Mobs category (oddly enough).

In summary:

The time delay of 2 seconds gives the game enough time to load the new location before we build anything
levitation will keep the player from falling, giving the box time to build around the player.

Now try out the mod. Switch your game mode to survival and teleport around. If you teleport underground but the box isn't building fast enough, you can also give the player the regeneration effect to keep the player from suffocating.

Challenge - Flying Mods

In the next section, we will use the teleportation mod from above to explore the far lands. In order to navigate the far lands in Minecraft Education, you will need the ability to fly. Code the following flight mods:

Mod 1: Give the player the levitation and slow falling effects whenever a piece of coal is used. For levitation, the player should rise quickly (high amplifier), but the effect should wear off quickly (low duration). The slow falling should last for one minute.

Mod 2: This is similar to mod 1, but uses a piece of flint instead. Also, this time the levitation effect will have a lower amplifier and higher duration than in mod 1. This mod should also grant slow falling for 1 minute.

Mod 3: When the player uses a piece of gunpowder, the player will be given regeneration (high amplifier, low duration)

Hint: Minecraft education has no block for the slow falling, you will have to use the command "/effect @s slow_falling [duration] [amplifier]" instead.

Exploring the Far Lands

Now that we've built the flying mods and teleportation mod, we are ready to explore the far lands. If you are unfamiliar with the far lands, the far lands is a region so far away in Minecraft that the terrain starts to generate incorrectly, producing weird results like you see below.

To reach this region, type "forward 20000000" (20 million) in any direction. Now use your flight mods to explore. Keep the following in mind:

The player can't collide with any blocks in the far lands, so you'll need use your flight mods to stay above the ground.
The player can now only move side to side. If you want to move forward, you can use your teleportation mod again or use an elytra and fireworks.
