- Motherboard slots that are designed to support ECC memory may differ electrically from slots that support non-ECC memory. You are unlikely to be able to mix ECC and non-ECC RAM in the same computer.
- In addition, PC RAM is becoming increasingly configurable and finicky. For some new motherboards, you may have to buy all of your RAM in one set to ensure electrical compatibility. All of this means you need to be increasingly concerned about adding RAM to your PC. Make sure that what you buy can be returned and read up before purchasing RAM.
