Sharing assignments in OpenClass
OpenClass is on a mission to improve & democratize education. Through our platform, educators can share assignments privately or with our entire community to improve accessibility of the best learning resources around the world.
Our assignments guide students through research-backed study sessions to reinforce learning. If this review is relevant to your teachings, feel free to add it to one of your classes!
Our format is simple and engaging: students are asked a retrieval question, then shown corrective feedback and a multiple-choice mastery question to assess their understanding of the material. Assignments adapt to unique student needs and continue to draw questions until a student has demonstrated mastery.
Explain how hurricanes can impact coastal ecosystems both immediately and in the long term.
Describe the impact of deforestation on the carbon cycle and its subsequent effect on global climate.
How does pollution affect aquatic ecosystems, and what are some potential long-term consequences?
Analyze the role of fire in maintaining the health of certain ecosystems and the potential negative impacts of fire suppression.
Evaluate the impact of urbanization on local ecosystems and suggest strategies to mitigate these impacts.
Explain how non-native species can outcompete native species for resources in an ecosystem.
Describe how non-native species can alter habitats and the potential consequences of these changes.
How can non-native species affect trophic interactions within an ecosystem?
Discuss the potential long-term ecological impacts of a non-native species becoming established in a new ecosystem.
How can the introduction of a non-native plant species affect the soil composition and nutrient cycling in an ecosystem?
Describe the role of pioneer species in primary succession and how they contribute to the development of an ecosystem.
Explain the difference between primary and secondary succession, providing an example of a disturbance that could lead to each type.
How do keystone species influence the resilience and stability of an ecosystem during ecological succession?
Discuss how human activities can influence the process of ecological succession and the resilience of ecosystems.
How do disturbances like wildfires contribute to the biodiversity of an ecosystem through the process of secondary succession?
How do disturbances like wildfires contribute to the biodiversity of an ecosystem through the process of secondary succession?
(Student response here)
Wildfires can contribute to the biodiversity of an ecosystem by initiating secondary succession. While wildfires destroy existing vegetation, they also create opportunities for new species to colonize the area. The fire clears out old, dominant species, allowing sunlight to reach the forest floor and enabling a variety of plants to grow. This increased plant diversity can attract different herbivores and predators, leading to a more diverse and balanced ecosystem. Over time, the ecosystem can become more resilient and stable as a result of this increased biodiversity.
Which of the following is a positive effect of wildfires on an ecosystem?
They prevent any future plant growth.
They permanently destroy the soil.
They create opportunities for new species to colonize the area.
They eliminate all forms of life in the affected area.
