Explain the process of cytokinesis and how it differs between plant and animal cells.
Instructor solution
Cytokinesis is the process of cytoplasmic division that follows mitosis, resulting in two daughter cells. In animal cells, cytokinesis occurs through the formation of a cleavage furrow that pinches the cell membrane inwards until the cell is split into two. In plant cells, cytokinesis occurs through the formation of a cell plate that develops at the center of the cell and gradually grows outward to divide the cell into two. The cell plate eventually becomes the new cell wall.
